#In the Spotlight – Reef Islands Initiative, creating climate refuges.

Lady Elliot Island is the first of five islands to be restored under our new $14 million, 10-year project. As climate change threatens the survival of life on the Reef, reef islands are key refuges to the marine life that calls the Great Barrier Reef home.

Acting like ‘arks’ to thousands of species of plants and wildlife—including red-tailed tropic birds, loggerhead green turtles, and giant manta rays—these sanctuaries are critical to the survival of the Reef’s marine life. Working with Queensland Parks and Wildlife and The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, we’re on the ground restoring and protecting these unique island habitats, boosting their resilience to climate change and future threats.
