The Great Barrier Reef Foundation is an independent entity registered with and regulated by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit-Commission and governed by a Board of Directors.
Our Board comprises representatives of Australian business, science and philanthropy, reflecting the charter to bring all sectors together for the benefit of the Great Barrier Reef.
The Board oversee the role of the Managing Director and has the job of ensuring all activities are directed towards securing the funds needed to support research to protect and restore the Great Barrier Reef. And importantly, these research outcomes must help and inform the Reef managers.
The process of selecting the priority research projects for funding is rigorous and is overseen by the Foundation's International Scientific Advisory Committee. Members of the International Scientific Advisory Committee (ISAC) are leaders in Reef research and management. ISAC ensures all investments are independent and focused on strategic and high-priority knowledge to benefit the Reef.
Under the agreement with the Australian Government, we have also established a Partnership Management Committee to oversee delivery of the $443.3 million Reef Trust Partnership.
Our board and committee members volunteer their time and do not receive any remuneration in these roles.
International Scientific Advisory Committee
The Foundation is directly advised by an International Scientific Advisory Committee (or ISAC). Independently chaired by Dr Paul Greenfield AO, the committee plays a critical role in the selection, development and implementation of significant research projects with the Foundation’s partners.
Reef Trust Partnership Management Committee
A panel of 10 science, research, marine and project management experts will oversee the investment for the Foundation and track its progress over the six-year life of the program, which will support the delivery of key actions under the Reef 2050 Plan and help ensure the future health of the Reef.
